Distributed Fair Auto Rate Medium Access Control for IEEE 802.11 Based WLANs

چکیده
∗ Much research has shown that a carefully designed auto rate medium access control can utilize the underlying physical multi-rate capability to exploit the time-variation of channel. In this paper, we develop a simple analytical model to investigate the rule maximizing the throughput of RTS/CTS based multi-rate wireless local area networks. Based on the obtained rule, we propose two distributed fair auto rate medium access control schemes called FARM and FARM+ from the viewpoint of throughput fairness and time-share fairness, respectively. With the proposed schemes, after receiving a RTS frame, the receiver selectively returns the CTS frame to inform the transmitter the maximum feasible rate probed by the signal-to-noise ratio of the received RTS frame. The key feature of the proposed schemes is that they are capable of maintaining throughput/timeshare fairness in asymmetric situation where the distribution of SNR varies with stations. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed schemes outperform the existing throughput/timeshare fair auto rate schemes in time-varying channel conditions. key words: Auto rate, wireless LANs, medium access control, time-varying channel

Performance Enhancement of IEEE 802.11b WLANs Using Cooperative MAC Protocol
IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) guarantees fair transmission opportunity to stations. Channel occupation of low rate stations in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) causes the performance anomaly resulting in the degradation of overall network throughput. Using cooperative communications between a high rate station and a low rate station, performance anomaly can b...
متن کاملAchieving Efficient Channel Utilization and Weighted Fairness for Data Communications in IEEE 802.11 WLAN under the DCF
Fair allocation of bandwidth and maximization of channel utilization are two important issues when designing a contention-based wireless medium access control (MAC) protocol. However, achieving both design goals at the same time is very difficult, and has not yet been addressed elsewhere. In this paper, we study this challenging problem, particularly for data communications in IEEE 802.11 wirel...
متن کاملA Distributed Transmission Control Method for Weighted Fairness in IEEE 802.11 WLANs
In wireless networks, a medium access control (MAC) protocol is sought to coordinate the transmissions of all nodes for the efficient utilization of the limited channel reception capability. When designing a MAC protocol, fair allocation of bandwidth is an important issue. However, achieving the design goal is difficult, especially for the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs). In th...

SUMMARY With simultaneous multiuser transmissions, spatial division multiple access (SDMA) provides substantial throughput gain over the single user transmission. However, its implementation in WLANs with contention-based IEEE 802.11 MAC remains challenging. Problems such as coordinating and synchronizing the multiple users need to be solved in a distributed way. In this paper, we propose a dis...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function: Bianchi Model
Currently, IEEE 802.11 is the de facto standard for WLANs [1]. It specifies both the medium access control and the physical layers for WLANs. The scope of IEEE 802.11 working groups (WGs) is to propose and develop MAC and PHY layer specifications for WLAN to handle mobile and portable stations. In this standard, the MAC layer operates on top of one of several possible physical layers. Medium ac...
